for the first time in a while last night. I have loved his music since I
bought 'American Gothic' from the Record & Tape Exchange in the
late 1970s. Listening to David Ackles properly requires a certain
mood and, tonight, he appealed. All his albums are masterpieces, but
my favourite is his first Elektra album. The start of 'Down River'
plunged me back in time to the Catskill Mountains in the 1980s, a
magical place in my mental mythology.

I first bought this as a tape at
a shop in the Catskills, that is probably long gone.

'Down River' one of those
alchemy-inducing songs that can a bring a tear of joy to the eye, but
is full of deep sorrow.

'Laissez-Faire' might just be
the one of the best love songs that has been written.

'The Road to Cairo' is a
powerfully moving piece of sad dread. There is a exceptional cover of
this song by another great contemporary voice , that of Julie
Driscoll, when she was singing with the Brian Auger Trinity.

What makes this album so special
in Ackles' sadly very small catalogue, is his backing band, who would
become Rhinoceros.

My other favourite David Ackles
album, 'American Gothic' was produced by Ackles' fan Bernie Taupin.

David Ackles' music is held in
high regard by many and if you haven't heard it you should.

I urge you to take 36 minutes
and 51 seconds to actively listen to one of the greatest and most original song writing voices of the 20th century.

Listen on Spotify

Last night I went to Ripon to see The Magpies on the first night of their tour to launch their first album. I didn't know what to expect as I hadn't listened to their music beforehand but was interested in going to the gig after seeing it announced on Sarah Smout's Facebook page, which I liked after seeing her play cello in Michael Chapman's band in York last year. Sarah was not there last night and the band consisted of Bella Gafney, Polly Bolton and Holly Brandon. I was very very impressed. I've been a huge folk fan for most of my life and The Magpies are one of the most exciting bands I've ever seen. They have real charisma and their blend of voices and instruments is stunning. All three write and write very well. Bella and Polly are both really distinctive lead vocalists. Their original songs are extremely good. The standout for me was 'Golden Girl', a beautiful haunting song, inspired by Swaledale (where my lead miner ancestors worked before they walked to Durham to become coal miners).Their covers were interesting and well chosen. I bought their CD (and was actually the first person ever to buy one) of which they unsurprisingly sold quite a few. 'Tidings' is excellent and I've played it more than once today. I've become an instant fan and will make a point to seeing this band again soon.
If you get a chance to see them on their current tour or subsequently, don't miss the opportunity. I'd be surprised if they didn't become stars of the folk music scene quickly.
This is my first post to this blog in just over 4 years. You can find other activities of mine in other places on the web if you search for manonadune or radioRAERONA. I'll post more about my web radio station later but the reason for posting today is to post a couple of playlists. I was sorting through my unread emails and came across one from 8 Tracks, sent at the end of December saying that they were ceasing streaming on 31st December. The email included the playlists I'd posted on 8 Tracks, so I thought I'd post them here:
In September, we visited Belfast for a short break. This was the first time I had been to Northern Ireland and I will definitely be visiting again and hopefully many times. I felt instantly at home in Belfast, which quickly became one of my very favourite places. While there we came across from great music and you can find a link to some videos I shot below:
After listening to music in the car from a usb stick for a couple of years and usually random playing hundreds of tracks, I'm now driving a car that has only a CD player. I first heard Nacht En Ontij by Boudewijn de Groot when a friend in den Haag played it to me many years ago. I've been playing it again a lot recently. There really is no other record quite like it for evoking a particular atmosphere. Even though I hardly understand a word it doesn't matter at all. The music and vocal performance are pure brilliance. I think this is one of the truly great records.
At the end of April I went to see Jacco Gardner at the 100 Club. I recently heard Jacco's music for the first time and became an instant fan. He plays a psychedelia for the 21st Century that channels the 1960s with real flair. Young enough to be the grandchild of the musicians who originated psychedelic rock, he brings his own uniqueness to the genre. This is music strongly rooted in the Dutch psych tradition and was played by a superb band. I was very very impressed. A nice bonus for the evening was the support band VENN. Playing only their fourth gig they made a big impression me and I will go and see them again.

Last week I came across a New York Post website article on Forgotify, a website that randomly plays any of the 20% of tracks (around 4 million in total) on Spotify, that have never been played by anyone.

Intrigued, I visited to the website and was immediately drawn in.

The playlist I've compiled is the result of skipping 100s of pieces of music and playing many others during the last week. It covers quite a number of genres and styles, ranging from to folk to avant garde, from jazz to film music and more.

Forgotify has quickly become my favourite method of music discovery.

I saw The Crazy World of Arthur Brown
at the Boileroom in Guildford on Friday night. It was an absolutely
enthralling show, without a doubt one of the best gigs I have ever
seen. Arthur's voice was amazingly powerful and controlled and he
had the energy and dynamism of performers 50 years his junior. His
band was superb, uniformly excellent with perfect timing, and with the
addition of a dancer, this was a true performance piece. I was lucky
enough to be right in front of the stage and able to provide a
shoulder when Arthur left the stage for an audience encounter. If
you get a chance to see this tour, then do - I can't recommend it
highly enough. Halloween 2014 was one of the true musical highlights
of my life.
On Sunday 6th April, The Nits played in the UK for only the fourth time ever. It was a great show. The highlight of highlights for me had to be 'Three Sisters', which is my favourite Nits song. It was great to hear Robert Jan Stips' keyboards on the song

'White
cap' is the fourth album by Mama Loo. I've been listening to
it for the last couple of evenings and it's quite unlike anything
I've heard before.

Mama loo are an innovative and adventurous Dutch power trio creating
impressionistic dreamscapes of music and words. This album will take
you into another world of melancholy yet joyous emotional adventure. The
particular highlights for me are 'Undertow' and 'Bitter Heart' but
the whole albums casts a spell for its whole running time. I've been
a huge fan of Edwin de Herder's music for many years and consider him to be one of the world's best guitar players. Here he's supported by the great drumming and bass playing of Gerrie
Spaansen and Rory van den Bergh on a highly unusual and
captivating album. You should hear 'Whitecap'.

Indiana born, California
raised and now resident in Texas, Dirk Hamilton is one of the world’s
great songwriter poets.

A professional musician
since the age of 15, Dirk played with a number of local Sacramento
bands and was a regular in the San Francisco bay area club scene
before moving to Los Angeles in the mid-70s.

Having heard a few demo
tracks, Gary Katz (producer of all Steely Dan’s albums up and
including ‘Gaucho’) instantly decided to produce Dirk’s first
album ‘You can sing on the left or bark on the right’

Critically acclaimed,
with a unique writing and singing style, compared to Dylan and Van
Morrison, a powerful new songwriter had emerged on the music scene.

‘Alias i’, a second
album for ABC, saw a rising star continuing to share his left field
view of the world, at once tender, cynical and funny.

After ABC folded, Dirk
moved to Elektra Asylum for his 2 masterpieces ‘Meet Me at the
Crux’ (heralded by Rolling Stone as one of the essential albums of
the 70s) and ‘Thug of Love’. It was only a matter of time until
Dirk Hamilton would be established in the canon of rock’s revered
singer/songwriters. But it wasn’t to happen.

During a tour
supporting Warren Zevon, loose talk about Zevon’s stage act from
members of Dirk’s band got back to Zevon, who then had Hamilton’s
band thrown off the tour. Following this, Dirk was dropped by
Elektra.

Never being one to
enjoy the business side of playing music, losing industry support at
this key time in his ascent through the big leagues led Dirk to
decide he didn’t have the stomach to play the industry game
anymore. He turned his back on music entirely and didn’t sing, play
or write a word for about 4 years, one of which was spent sitting in
The Shamrock, a bar in Stockton, California and 3 of which he worked
as a counselor for troubled teens. Mid-way through Dirk’s counselor
years he began playing in a cover band and soon he found that new
songs were coming to him and he started writing again. In 1986 the
Stockton version of The Dirk Hamilton Band was formed and they played
up and down the California coast until the late 80s, when Dirk
discovered he had a devoted fan base in Italy and the last 20-plus
years have been split between Italian tours, US shows and recording
albums, which now total 16.

Dirk Hamilton grows
more powerful as a songwriter and performer of engaging, offbeat,
literate songs

For the first time,
after a long lifetime of making albums, Dirk Hamilton appears solo on

I can't wait to hear the album that's coming out in September. I fell in love with ' numbers don't lie' the first time I heard it and bought the album 'What we lose in the fire we gain in the flood' as a consequence. I listened to the CD for the first time this afternoon...And then I listened to it again...and again after that. This is an album that has become an instant favourite and one to which I will always listen.misfitmanonadunehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12342007816411643148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4969141794663535770.post-67046870737017083252011-06-03T19:03:00.000-07:002011-06-03T19:09:35.825-07:00Winter's Bone music live<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz1rLuOpFavQw5edZ8pGT6i-tg5mYDoK8LYYeLkPCKSZlebM2NGxAfWoy-y1SNk4nsopiCVv4OIkkNkca_FGmzO2sdnDZNwDhZeJjxPyCcE9CWAm1ft0jmVEI3GjR3es7YwyyS58w3SQ/s400/Winters+Bone.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614180115379714802" />
'Winter's Bone' is one of the greatest films I have ever seen.
